Decimals are multiplied like whole numbers, but you should place 
the decimal point appropriately. The decimal point is placed such 
that the number of decimal places in the product equals the total 
of the number of decimal places in the numbers being multiplied. 
Example: 

8.31 x 3 = 24.93

Explanation: 831 x 3 = 2493. There are 2 decimal places in 8.31 
and 0 decimal places in 3. The product must have 2 + 0 = 2 decimal 
places. Thus, 8.31 x 3 = 24.93 

Here are two tips for decimal multiplication:

1. When a decimal is multiplied by 10, the decimal point shifts one 
place to the right; when a decimal is multiplied by 100, the 
decimal point shifts two places to the right; and so on. Example: 

8.31 x 10 = 83.1 and 8.31 x 100 = 831 

2. Any whole number can be treated as a decimal. Example: 

831 = 831.0 = 831.00 = 831.000
