Tips for Number
1. Show your children that you like numbers
2. From the time your child is very young, count everything. When you empty a grocery bag, count the number of apples. Count the number of stairs to your home.
3. Mental calculation strategies need to be founded in knowledge and understanding of some basic mathematical facts and skills. These include counting, starting with counting forwards and backwards in ones, then in tens and twos, then in fives, hundreds, fifties, twenty fives, fifteens, thousands, and later on, in steps of 0.1 and 0.01, 0.5, 0.25, 2.5, and so on.
4. Naming the first, second, third, fourth, and last items when you talk about things in a line or a series. For example, when cooking, ask the children, "What do you think the first ingredient will be? Ok, what is the second thing we should add to the bowl?"
