decimal division

Decimals are divided like whole numbers, but you should place the
decimal point appropriately. The decimal point is placed such that
the quotient has as many decimal digits as the dividend, a simple
rule for simple cases. Example:

18.93 ?3 = 6.31

Explanation:

1893 ?3 = 631. There are 2 decimal places in the dividend (18.93).
The quotient must have 2 decimal places. Thus, 18.93 ?3 = 6.31

When a decimal is divided by 10, the decimal point shifts one place
to the left; when a decimal is divided by 100, the decimal point
shifts two places to the left; and so on. Example:

83.1 ?10 = 8.31 and 83.1 ?100 = 0.831

Note that division can always be checked by multiplication. Example:

18.93 ?3 = 6.31 and 6.31 x 3 =18.93

Here are some tips for dividing a decimal by another decimal:

1. Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right until it is
a whole number.
2. Move the decimal point in the dividend to the right by the same
number of places as the decimal point was moved to make the divisor
a whole number.
3. Then divide the new dividend by the new divisor
